The Dept of environment has released plans to use thermal imaging from satellite to count the number of empty/holiday homes in the country in an attempt to find “zombie” estates and validate the second property tax return. A dept release quotes a offical as saying that the Medium Resolution for Environmental Assessment and Logging LIDAR  (MEALL) system from ESA will be used to count warm patches in every household and match this against the census database; houses with no warm patches , or too few, will be counted as empty and if necessary tax bills will be sent to owner.

Seems like a novel use of the system and its good to see the EO community doing its bit
