Anyone following the flood in the west of Ireland, will have seen the flood maps produced by the Copernicus Emergency Response Service. But they concentrate only on large population areas like Athlone. If you we want to see the full extent of the flooding across the shannon basin and beyond we have to produce our own.
Using a Seninel 1 image from Dec 13 we can produce a flood map using a simple backscatter threshold. Here for example we can see the area of land down stream of banagher that is flooded (the non flooded land is blanked out as is the normal extent of the shannon).
